Which flight controller for RC helicopters in 2026

Flight Controllers

This is my list of flight controllers in order that I would consider using in 2026.

Mikado VBar EVO

VBar Setup

I’ve been using Mikado VBar for a long time and I think the EVO and V8 are a step up from V7. Addons like the power backup are more expensive than other backup options, but I think the integration is worth it.

If I couldn’t have VBar, the next option is a bit trickier. Potentially it would have been RotorFlight, but I think with the release of the Spirit Wave and new lower pricing on the FBLs, I would have to go with ….

Spirit Systems

Spirit Setup

I flew Spirit first in 2013 when I moved off the Align flight controllers. It was really good, but I never liked having to bring a laptop to the field and having to leave the flightline to do tuning, which was when I changed to VBar.

However with the new Spirit Wave and fully integrated ecosystem, I would seriously consider trying one of these. The hardware price on the flight controllers has dropped considerable, and the ease of use would allow more flying time.

You may need a PC to do an initial connection, but all tuning can be done from the Wave. And it even has a built-in simulator. How cool is that?

RotorFlight

I started the RotorFlight journey a few months ago by buying a RadioMaster TX16S. The first thing you have to do is upgrade the operating system and ELRS module, which means searching for software, installing it and trying to update.

The update processes are different for each it of hardware, be it firmware on a memory card or USB to PC while running the software. Even doing that required reading and getting help, at which point I said “I’m out”. With RotorFlight not owning the hardware stack of radio/module/receiver/flybarless, and them each getting updates, it can become a pain, especially as being technically biased we want to be on the latest versions all the time.

I may give it another go in the future, but for now you are No. 3.

Ikon 2/ Brain 2

Although I’ve never used these, we have a few of them at the field, and they look very capable. I’d probably pair it with a Spektrum radio

BeastX

It’s simple, but it works. I used to really enjoy these, so now they may be even better.

Anything else?

Is there anything else worth considering? Not sure 🤷
